I have been pondering what to contribute as an offering to the Harry Potter blog, and have decided to start safe, with a familiar character. The following is an attempt to discover why Draco Malfoy's character has enjoyed such popularity.
Of all the characters in the HP universe, Draco Malfoy has enjoyed the most popularity. Whether this is due to his attitude of "I'm so bad, I'm good", or because his character is being portrayed by a hot piece of work named Tom Felton, is open to question. But it can't be denied that, in all of fandom out there, no one character has enjoyed more fan clubs, fanfics, poetry, or fan art than the Blond Ferret.
So what's behind the fascination? What could make millions of fans lose their heads over an openly prejudiced, bitter, snide, mean hearted, unfeeling, selfish, self absorbed, and arrogant little rat like Draco? What could make any nice, self respecting person dive in and revel in his badness, or pray for his eventual redemption? Time and again it's proven that his greatest love is his reflection, followed by anything that could ruin someone else's day. His tendency to whine is well documented, as is his habit of hiding behind his friends when he bullies his enemies. Still, it's been observed that, while his canon character is quite loathsome, it does possess a certain style.
Most fanfictions have sought to put the Pale Prince in a more sympathetic light, and have openly pulled him from the edge of falling in with the Dark Lord. A much smaller number have him resigned to his fate, but with his character redeemed by virtue of unwillingness. Still others fluff him out disgustingly, adding about fifty pounds of sugar to his personality. This group is actually rather large, and can be pointed to as the main culprits in Draco's rise to fandom popularity.
Some will site Draco's snide sense of humor as their favorite trait. Others will say bad boys are cool. I say his attitude is magnetic in a very bad way. The guy who's all wrong, so of course you must have him. He drawls as he speaks, he leans against walls, he smirks. Anyone remember Billy Idol? The "I'm too cool for you, and aren't you privileged to know me?" attitude is both infuriating and, in some strange way, compelling. Like a jigsaw puzzle, and about as difficult to fathom. For some the compulsion is difficult to resist, and the mystery only adds to the appeal.
He's obviously intelligent, with a sharp wit. He cuts with it regularly, as any fan of the Harry Potter series knows. One of my personal favorites is;
"If brains were money, Longbottom, you'd be poorer than the Weasleys. And that's saying something."
And yet perhaps because of remarks such as the above, we also love it when he gets his own back. I will openly admit my affection for the Sneering Sycophant, but I had to chuckle with glee when a) Hermione slapped him and b) He was turned into a ferret by Professor Moody and bounced all over the corridor. Such punishments are undeniably well deserved, as Draco's propensity for causing misery seems to increase with each new book.
In the end, I can offer no definitive answer as to why Draco has enjoyed such a huge rush of popularity. Perhaps it is as simple as the fact that a handsome young man was cast in the role of Draco's character. But for many, including myself, there is a bit more to it. There's something about a confident, powerful bad boy that makes one idealize him. Usually it's only personal experience with them that shakes you back to reality.

Posted by Madmaxime at February 20, 2005 10:08 PMExcellent commentary, Rockygirl. I enjoyed reading it. Admittedly, I'm not as taken with Draco as you are (or at all, really) but it was interesting to learn the thoughts of fangirl who can speak in complete sentences.

Thank you, Grindelwald! I was actually nervous about posting this, as I wasn't sure it was good enough. Your praise is kind, and makes me think maybe I did something right!

Yes, I must agree with Grindelwald, Rocky. You had some great insights into the popularity of Draco's character. Extra points for dubbing him "the Blond Ferret."

I think the Draco fanfiction torrent started well before the release of the first movie, so Tom Felton can't be held entirely to blame. Cassandra Claire though, is another matter...

Ah, yes, I had forgotten Cassandra Claire! No Draco is more universally loved than hers. I've read Draco Dormiens, but...I can't say her Draco does it for me. I can't say why, but he's a bit off in some way. Urg...

I thouraoughly enjoyed reading this. I, too enjoy Draco as a character himself, even before I saw the movies. There is just SOMETHING that hooks us and holds us there, about him. I belive that this review was VERY well written. Good Job.
DATE: 03/17/2003 05:27:00 PM
Excellent Rocky! I must say, that was one of the best editorial type things I've read in a long time. Draco has always been my favorite character, and all of my favorite ships include him ^.^ He plays a big part in all of my fanfiction.

Hi. That is a REAAAALLY good explaination and me being a Tom/Draco fan......yah. If I list all my crushes, bad boy lines will be VERY obvious but I'm not going to bore you with such things. Anways, that is AWESOME! :)
DATE: 04/20/2003 08:18:30 AM
Thank you very much, all! When I wrote this it was out of a genuine desire to not only explain, but understand myself the secret behind the fascination. I don't know if I succeeded (thanks to those who think I did!) but I really enjoyed writing this! :)
DATE: 04/21/2003 11:48:11 AM
Well done! I think your veiws on why Draco is such an interesting and loved charater are brilliant. Maybe It's just the bad boy thing. It's suprising that what comes across as a more secondary charachter that J.K. Rowling wrote in to be Harry's rival and school bully so children could sympathize with Harry, becomes such a well loved character. Draco reminds me heavily of another well wrote bad boy character Spike from buffy, and not just on appearence but personality. Incidently Spike also draws parallels with Billy Idol. My views of why he is so loved, is because there is alot of room for resoning as to why he is so mean. I think the reasons the fan fictions work so well, is for one Tom Felton is hot! and also in the books he's got that sexy slytherin thing going for him and two is Draco is such an interesting character. He can be wrote into many interesting scenarios and I think many would agree once you've read one Draco fan fiction your pretty much hooked!

All so very true..can't say much more. Just..true. *goes off to drool over Draco fan art* Doopeedoo!

Personaly, I think the whole Harry Potter revolves around Draco. To name a few, if it wasn't for him then Harry would've never gotten on the Quidditch team. If it wasn't for him then Potter would've never found out that it was Voldemort not Snape who wanted the stone. And thats only the first book!!
Also, I agree with the Bad the 'bad-boy' thing. I mean why else would we like the Prince of Slytherin?
DATE: 07/28/2003 11:38:09 PM
Draco Malfoy is so loved because he's the typical bad boy. I mean think about it. Most girls are attracted to bad boys. I know I love Draco cuz he's mean and evil, and he stnds out among the rest. Not even Crabbe or Goyle are incredibly mean.
DATE: 07/31/2003 11:45:45 PM
-----
All girls go for the bad boy! I love bad boys! I'll never know why I do but I like it. I like Draco because he does whatever he wants and is insanely sexy! I also like Spike(resemblence)from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I only like him when he's evil and beats the crap out of Buffy. But anyway back to Draco, Harry sucks 'cause he's the good guy, I hate the good guys! Maybe I like the bad-asses 'cause I'm one of them. hehehehe!
DATE: 08/04/2003 11:06:19 AM
Don't forget us who embrace who he is, no sugar coating and make him just as evil as J.K. Rowling wants him to be. The bully.

I personally think that Draco Malfoy is a hottie and has a cool attitude. My old friend Natasha loved him and made a big fuss over him but i dont blame her.
DATE: 08/11/2003 07:14:43 AM
He -does- have that sex appeal (and my GOD is Tom Felton hot!:D) but it's kind of a slap in the face when you actually meet one of these types of guys. I mean, of COURSE they're just soooooooo yummy *giggles* but that doesn't mean it gives them the right to act like stuck-up prats. Oh well, that was my rant for today. ;D Please don't flame me, was just giving my opinion

I liked Draco even before the first Harry Potter movie came out, so it wasn't due to Tom's looks (although I've got to admit that he's really a handsome bloke, but too young for me *g*), but rather to the various (and not too fluffy) portrayals and pov's of him by several fanfic authors. Something I think is funny that most fanart depicts Draco as a sexy heartthrob when he's described rather nasty-looking in the books... :-)

Draco Malfoy is FINE that's the reason he's appleaing to me and plus we was made for each other. He is the FINEST boy in Harry Potter out of all the books unless they get a charicter that is finer than Draco, which would be impossible.

I love ya felton! Most of the Potter friends despise Draco, but some very few love him to death(like me)! We usually don't know why we like this hotty that spends all day bothering potty( and I meant to call him potty!!).I like him 'cause he's more then a snobbish brat, he's hot, he's sweet(kinda), and he's just plain mean! i like bad boys, and he's both cute and sweet, and hot and bad.

Wow, well i defintelty agree with a lot of what everyone said. expecially that bit Glistening Soul said about there being a lot of room for reasons he's so mean. (i myself toy with that in a few fan fics) the fact that Tom Felton is such a looker just adds to the effect. (hes 16 yesterday everyone say HAPPY BIRTHDAY!) well done Rocky, i really like your view on this and u definetly asked all the frequently asked questions. Perhaps making things a little clearer for everyone else. Oh and BTW i happen to think Tom looks good even with his natural light brown hair as well as the stunning bleached blonde hair. well thats all i have to say, ppl are welcome to e-mail me at Blueyes_827@yahoo.com THX AGAIN ROCKY!

You are absolutly right about Draco Malfoy. But there are other reason why people like Draco. Say, in the fifth book. When Harry's got that huge attitude problem of his, he wasnt very likable. But Draco, on the other hand, he was the cool guy of that book, I mean he was a little mean, a little selfish, but he didnt whine as much as Harry, or Harry seemed to, and he didnt throw as much temper-temdroms.
Sometimes, with all that Harry-Ron-Hermione drama and temper problems. Draco just seems like relief, a refreashment, and a...change of 'climate'.

Well,i have 2 say that what u wrote was totally awesome! It clears things up a bit. and you're right about that "Usually it's only personal experiences with them that shakes you back to reality". I know this guy at school, and he is just the bad-boy type. He does all that Malfoy does and of course looks good while doing it(LOL). But he is such a brat. And makes me want to smack him once or twice, coz he deserves it.
And it is true that maybe because Tom is soooooo hot that made me like Draco more.

Rocky girl, I must say,Impressive. I have yet not found a review on Draco Malfoy better than yours.Maybe because every other line is not "OMG!! DRACO MALFOY IS SO HOT!!" Really, if your some imature person like that I suggest you go find yourself a life and a dictionary-try to expand your vocabulary just a little bit more. I am completely head-over-heels about Draco. I really can't explain exactly why,... but some of my guesses is that because he's so intelligently mean. You just have to love him for that. Also, I think because he hates harry so much. No one hates him as much as the heroic harry potter. After a while the reader gets sick of the good boy, and their mind kind of wanders of into the total opposite.--Wow, I totally just realized that I'm writing way to much and everyone's probaly to lazy to read everything I wrote(like me), so i'll stop writing now. Once again-nice job Rocky.

Well I definitely think that you are right about the 'bad boy' attitude. I started to like Draco by the fanfiction i read about him and then when i read the books i could not like harry even if he was the hero. I guess i like him bad :) veeeeery bad!!! It is true that Tom Felton is kind of cute (too young for me) but i guess what fanfiction readers like most of him is the idealized imagine we have of him, such as tall with grey eyes long blond hair and his usual smirk and sharp comebacks... all of this to say Long life to Draco Malfoy! :)
DATE: 10/27/2003 01:04:11 PM
Yeah, I started likeing draco malfoy when I read his fanfics because it kind of explained a more clear view about him and he's perfect the way he is. Although I like harry in a different way too. They are both hot.

DATE: 11/18/2003 08:45:56 AM
I think the only reason everybody loves Draco is because he is so cool and evil! I like bad boys, i also will, but he is the ULTIMED bad boy...if he just could be a vampire, it would be complete...
DATE: 11/27/2003 07:54:44 PM
Draco is the most amazing person: if he only would be real...Good job writing!! Really, almost no mistakes...
It would be so much better if Draco ever won a fight of Harry: Harry is sometimes a real moron (especially in the 5th book) then you can see harry is a real teenager...but draco always stays cool and thats the fun about him!!!
DATE: 11/27/2003 07:58:09 PM
I just had to take the Myers Briggs personality test for one of my classes at school and that got me thinking about what personality type Draco would be...in particular Cassandra Claire's Draco Malfoy. Anyone have any ideas??? You can e-mail me with them...or just post.

heh wow finally a fangirl who isn't a preppy little....******* and has a vocabulary of more than what.. 5 words. I totally agree on your draco theory, and I, myself was introduced to Harry Potter books at 11, and since then was always a draco sympathiser. I think it was rather rude of Harry to toss him away when draco offered his friendship. The movie only came out in..2000..i think...or something like that. no wait..like 2002..or 1 ah whatever anyway, the Tom Felton thing just added to the draco attraction. Tom portrays him very well. Kudos to Tom for having talent.

I am in complete love with Draco. He is such a bad boy and a total hottie! He is so sexy with his blonde hair and his famous "I'm better than you" attitude. I don't understand how anyone could dislike him. I also agree with anne clayr, she said Draco offered Harry friendship and she's right!
DATE: 01/27/2004 08:53:19 PM
I agree with what you posted Rocky. I love Draco, always have. Even though in the book he makes me want to throw something at him most of the time. But you made alot of good points and I also like what Sun-Fyre had to say. I agree with the few that posted about the Draco/Spike similarity...might make some sense about why I lust Draco so much. And also Cassandra Claire's Draco was great, if not a little angsty. There's another fanfic of Draco that some poeple might enjoy if they havent allready. Its from the author Anise, and it's titled The Bat Bogeys Cometh. I hope she doesn't get pissed at me for posting, but so check it out.
P.S. Tom makes you just want to be 16 again doesn't he. Ahhh...jailbait.

Draco Malfoy is my favorite character. And, Slytherin is my favorite house. Who would want to be in Gryffindor, sure your brave, but all the Gryffinors are stupid. They do things not thinking of comsequences. Slytherin's are the smart one's. And, Draco Malfoy is the Prince of Slytherin! Everyone there loves him. Tom Felton added to peoples love of Draco. Tom Felton is 16, I'm 13, thats not so bad is it? ;)
DATE: 02/27/2004 10:28:28 PM
because he's dead sexy and not the goody-goody type like the gryffindorks are portrayed as... we like them BAD boys... :grr:
DATE: 02/28/2004 02:52:46 PM
I like Draco Malfoy because the character is fun. I'm not a fangirl in the slightest. I don't think that Tom Felton is anything close to hot. I like the scarcastic wit. That may be because I'm sarcastic mysef and have a very simmilar sence of humor. I don't see what is wrong with taking pleasure in the pain of others. Every story needs an antagonist. He is Harry Potter's character foil. Harry has dark hair while Draco has blonde. Harry was born to be the hero the good guy when Draco was born for the dark be in service to a monster. Harry was raised without knowing of the wizarding world when Draco knew nothing else. The Slytherin house has something about it that the adverage person can relate to. It seems more real. It has an apeal that Rowling didn't intend. The wold she created is a simple childerns wold of black and white. The world we see is one of prejudice and hypocricy. The Slytherins seem to be thought of as death eaters in training ang muggle haters. While some of those prejudices are not ill founded they are still an unfair assumption. At the age of 11 a hat can not tell if a person is good or evil it can tell what the more outstanding and stonger character traits. The fact that Slytherins are percieved the way that they are may be one of the many variables that pushes them to the darkness. It is everyone against them. Being a Slytherin attracts people tpo Draco Malfoy. He seems to be the wizarding world's version of an aristocrat and seems to be respected by many people outside of the school. Nobility and money is something everyone has wanted at at least one point in their life. He isn't perfect and has failed in the book. It is intesting how Draco lookes up to his father and defends his mother at every turn. He can't be as cold hearted as he is portayed to be if he loves his famly so much. He offered Harry potter his hand in friedship. It couldn't have been to turn him over to his master because Voldemord was gone at the time. His retaliation seems to bebecause it was a blow to his pride to be turned down for a low class Weasley. In the robe shop he wasn't too rude he did attempt to make small talk to another child of his age who would only give one word in responce. it would be annoying and he did say sorry when he mentiond Harry's dead parents. He doesent appear to be someone who know how to say that their sorry and was clearly uncomftorable in the situation. The dragon of bad faith isn't evil. he is a bully who has a very interesting pesonality. Sarcasim may be the lowest form of wit but it is still wit and there are few people who can honestly claim to be witty like Draco can. In the book he is good at entertaining his peers he has a dramatic fair to his pesonality. He is the lovable not so bad badboy.
DATE: 02/29/2004 06:45:17 AM
Aw no, I'm not mad at all. ;) (gets warm, fuzzy feeling.) *The Bat-Bogeys Cometh* is now complete, btw, on Schnoogle. It's the first fic in a series of three-- the second chapter of the second one, *Heavenly Creatures*, just went up (also on Schnoogle.) I have a way of writing unending epics, and there's something about Draco that is epic-y, or epic-worthy, in a way that Harry has never seemed to be to me. Or maybe it's more that Draco can kinda stand on his own; Harry just seems to need the supporting characters a lot more. Until OotP, a lot of people (including me) felt that Harry was a very reactive character. Dramatic events would carry him along, but *he* didn't instigate them.

DATE: 03/24/2004 10:22:46 PM
Very nicely written. I agree, Draco....and Tom are both sooo incredibly hot, how could you resist them?! I myself think that Draco isn't really bad, his attitude just reflects on what his father is, and I doubt he really wants to act like a "Bad Boy." You've probably seen how his father treats him in COS, and that should have won him some sympathy.
DATE: 04/08/2004 08:27:45 AM
Well written! I have to agree that Tom Felton cast in Draco's role doesn't diminish Draco's popularity one bit, and neither does Cassie Claire's Draco in her trillogy.
I think that what attracts people to his character is that we know so little about him. He's a bad boy, the sptting image of his father, but WHY? Is he naturally like that or is it because he's been brought up in a home where he's only been taught to act that way and to do everything that his father does?

DATE: 07/25/2004 12:54:23 AM
WOW, this is like the first actual *intelligent* fangirling of draco's that i have ever come across, and Grindelwald is quite right in saying the first to speak in complete and meaningful sentences. WELL DONE! I also think that Cassie Claire's Draco is rather closer to the original than some of the other ones...-_- except i think maybe she made draco open up to harry and company a little TOO quickly....i loved her fics though, they made me want to have something that i could spill my heart over, like a desperate obsession.
And it has to be the bad boyish character of Malfoy in the books [and of course Tom Felton being sexy can't hurt too much ;)]and the fact that he hides everything except malice, so we don't know what he's feeling. This really lets people put their own choice of feelings inside him...i think Cassie Claire actually did one of the best jobs of filling in his real character. So thats probly the reason for so much fanfiction, because he has a lot of OPEN room in his character in the book.
WOW that was long....... :\
but if RockyGirl could post a reply to this, and maybe give me her e-mail address, then we could talk more about stuff like this...

Posted by: laura allam at June 4, 2005 09:38 AMI love bad boys... Especially when they are hard to get. Draco´s cold character makes him attractive! And the way his cold gray eyes are described by the author is so wonderful. Hail J. K. Rowling for making Draco Malfoy like that.
Posted by: Lady Slytherin at July 23, 2005 12:03 PMThis thread is so old, but still.
I actually don't like Draco Malfoy for being a mean but clever 'bad boy'. Actually, canonically he's often portrayed as somewhat stupid and quite weak. But I like him because he's a character in an interesting position, and I've always been curious to know what'll happen to him. Will he follow in the Death Eater footsteps of his father (easy and excepted way) or will he turn sortakinda-good like Snape? I'd always hoped for the last option (because of course, that would mean that the character should change in someway and get some actual plot in the book), but the other always seemed more likely. But now, with HPB... ^^; Doesn't seem that unlikely after all. Now it's just a pity that he will quite probably die in book 7.
Thanks for your comment Mia. Rockygirl might be updating with a new Draco editorial now that HP6 is out. So stay tuned. :)
