Oak Ridge Symphony Does Potter

If the terms Quidditch, Hogwart, Gryffindor and Professor Dumbledore resonate in your family, you should by all means bring them, one and all, to hear the Oak Ridge Symphony at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, in the Oak Ridge High School Auditorium. This is an event that young music lovers are sure to love.

These strange terms are the wild imaginings of J.K. Rowlings' popular Harry Potter series whose score by John Williams is as familiar to today's youth as "Fantasia" is to their parents. In the spirit of generational nostalgia, The Oak Ridge Symphony plans a magical evening as they perform Williams' "Harry Potter Suite for Orchestra," Dukas' "Sorcerer's Apprentice" and the defining work of the genre, Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique."

Potter Help For Homeless

Homeless vendors of 19 street newspapers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland will have first crack at peddling the opening chapter of the German translation of J. K. Rowling's new best-selling novel, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." Two weeks before the translation's long-anticipated official release date, Nov. 8, the newspapers, sold by the homeless in subways, shopping districts and bars, will carry the start of the boy wizard's latest adventure. "We were thrilled when we heard about Ms. Rowling's offer," said Jürgen Angerer, the managing director of the Hamburg street newspaper Hinz & Kunzt. "For us this is a gift from heaven. For our Harry Potter issue, we'll double the circulation to 120,000 copies and we're convinced that it is going to sell out right away." In Hamburg, about 400 vendors, who sell the monthly for the equivalent of about $1.70, are allowed to keep about 90 cents of the proceeds.
